The New York-based independent film and TV powerhouse that Fenkel runs with Daniel Katz, A24 is riding high after “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” a genre-defying multiverse adventure, enjoyed a sweep at the Academy Awards, collecting seven awards including best picture. The innovative and influential indie studio cemented its arrival in the prestige film big leagues even before the big night by dominating the nominations derby with 18 bids, including 11 for “Everything Everywhere” and three for “The Whale,” which commanded the best actor trophy for Brendan Fraser. A24’s unconventional approach to filmmaking and marketing has been followed closely by the majors in the past, with the company at one time being the target of acquisition rumors, while other reports indicate A24 is making in the process of trying to create its own franchises. During the strikes, A24’s indie cred allowed the company to garner SAG-AFTRA interim agreements to keep working on several films despite the actors strike. The 2023 slate included Ari Aster’s head-spinner “Beau Is Afraid,” box-office horror hit “Talk to Me,” Celine Song’s heartbreaking “Past Lives,” “Dicks! The Musical” and Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” his first film since A24 released “Under the Skin” a decade ago.
